My daughter was home from college last weekend and went into my closet to get a pair of pants she was looking for. I heard her call out, “Mom, come here! We’ve GOT to do something about these clothes!”
“What do you mean?” I asked her.
“Well,” she said. “You’re my Mom, and you’re fairly young and fairly hip, and you really need to dress the part. Some of these things are outdated, some are totally drab, and most of them just don’t fit you well anymore.”
Now I like the “fairly young, fairly hip” part, even though I’m not quite sure I agreed with her on either statement. But I did like her idea of spending the afternoon shopping, eating dinner and spending some quality time together! So off we went …
That evening, as I settled down with my Bible before going to bed, I turned to Colossians chapter 3. And you know what? I heard God call out, “Donna, we’ve GOT to do something about what you’re wearing!”
“What do you mean, Lord?” I asked Him.
“Well,” He said. “You’re My daughter, and you really need to dress the part. That haughty spirit doesn’t look very good on you, and that critical tongue and lack of patience … well, they just don’t fit you anymore.”
“Come shopping in My Word,” He said. “I’ll give you new garments to wear – some compassion, humility and gentleness. Feast at My table – there you’ll find kindness, patience and love. In fact, spend some quality time with Me, and I’ll give you a whole new wardrobe.”
